About an hour's drive North of Auckland, Matakana is a small but bustling rural community and is home to many of New Zealand's best artists and crafts people. After many years balancing a career as an industrial designer and academic, Nick Charlton has set up a small workshop where he makes a variety of 'industrial craft' objects. Among these are the Native Bird range.
This collection was specifically designed to make use of clay components which are produced in small batches every few months at the Morris and James Pottery. Established over 30 years ago, this unique business is the largest craft based production pottery in New Zealand, and is well worth a visit! Using a combination of light industrial manufacturing combined with traditional hand skills, the approach taken at the Pottery is a perfect match for Nick's design interests. It has long been a fascination of his - exploring old and new technologies - but in a way that does not lose the character and individuality of the hand made. His workshop reflects that approach, featuring traditional hand tools, some decades old, alongside 3D printers and a CNC machine.
